Unexpected Expenses
Sometimes things don't go according to plan. Having some money available can help.
Nobody plans for these
This isn't about worrying — it's simply about being a little prepared.
Keeping some money available
Adults often keep some money available for unexpected costs. For kids, this can simply mean keeping a little money aside rather than spending every dollar right away.
Having an option
If you spend the whole $10, you have no money left. If you kept $3 aside, you have an option.
Split your $10 three ways
You have $10. How much would you spend, how much would you save for a goal, and how much would you keep available for something unexpected?
There's no single correct answer — different splits work for different people. The important part is thinking about all three, not just spending it all.

Use everyday examples rather than frightening scenarios. Adults have larger unexpected expenses and may need much bigger savings buffers — there's no need to encourage your child to worry about adult financial problems.
