🏦 BANKS & DIGITAL MONEY · LESSON 5

What Is a Bank Transfer?

A bank transfer moves money from one account to another.

A simple example

Who transfers money?

Lots of people, every day

Parents, employers, businesses, and people paying for something can all transfer money to someone else's account.

An important distinction

Transfer vs income

A transfer can simply be money moving between accounts owned by the same person — like moving money from a savings account to an everyday account. No new money was earned, it just moved. A payment from an employer may be income. A gift from a parent is money received. Same mechanism — a transfer — but different meaning depending on where the money came from.

Two ways money moves

Transfer vs card payment

A bank transfer moves money directly between accounts. A debit card is used to make a payment, usually drawing money from an account too — just through a different process.

Try it yourself

Alex's balance

Alex has $10. Dad transfers $5. Alex buys something for $3. What's Alex's balance?

$10 + $5 − $3 = $12.

Did Alex earn the $5?

No — it was transferred to Alex, not earned through work.

Staying safe

Transfer safety basics

Check who you're sending money to
Don't share banking passwords
Don't approve payments you don't understand
Ask a trusted adult if you're unsure
Be careful with unexpected payment requests
For parents

This is a good opportunity to explain legitimate transfers your family makes, without exposing private banking information.
